This essay examines the relationship between Eric Voegelin and Leo Strauss in order to show the central themes necessary to elucidate their philosophical positions. The essay reveals the centrality of the figure of Plato as a point of departure to understand the agreement and the disagreement concerning fundamental questions (such as the way of reading ancient texts, the importance of the historical perspective or the importance of the study of the past in order to orient the modern science) which revolves (...) around the issue of the relation between revelation and philosophy. The work concludes with an identification of the common core of both thinkers that allows us to understand their differences (homogeneity or heterogeneity of reality and the human) and, moreover, identifies both perspectives with a «foundational» (Voegelin) or «negative» (Strauss) interpretation of Plato’s thought. Barzykowski and Moulin suggest that déjà vu and involuntary autobiographical memories recruit similar retrieval processes. Here, we invite the authors to clarify three issues: (1) What mechanism prevents déjà vu to happen more frequently? (2) What is the role of semantic cues in involuntary autobiographical retrieval? and (3) How déjà vu relates to non-believed memories?

In this paper we address the problem of short-term electric energy prediction using a time series forecasting approach applied to data generated by a Paraguayan electricity distribution provider. The dataset used in this work contains data collected over a three-year period. This is the first time that these data have been used; therefore, a preprocessing phase of the data was also performed. In particular, we propose a comparative study of various machine learning and statistical strategies with the objective of predicting (...) the electric energy consumption for a given prediction horizon, in our case seven days, using historical data. In this paper we have tested the effectiveness of the techniques with different historical window sizes. Specifically, we considered two ensemble strategies, a neural network, a deep learning technique and linear regression. Moreover, in this study, we tested whether the inclusion of meteorological data can help achieve better predictions. In particular, we considered data regarding temperature, humidity, wind speed and atmospheric pressure registered during the three-year period of data collection. The results show that, in general, the deep learning approach obtains the best results and that such results are obtained when meteorological data are also considered. Moreover, when meteorological data is used, a smaller historical window size is required to obtain precise predictions. (shrink)

Objectives To develop and test two educational programmes (interactive and passive) aimed at improving family doctors' (FD) prescribing practices and patient's knowledge and use of non-opioid analgesics (NOA).Methods The educational programmes were conducted in two family medicine clinics by using a three-stage approach: baseline evaluation, design, and implementation of educational activities, and post-programme evaluation. An interactive educational programme (IEP) was compared with a passive educational programme (PEP); both were participated by FDs and patients. The IEP for FDs comprised of workshops, (...) discussion groups, in-service training and guidelines, while for patients the IEP consisted of an interactive session with a video, leaflets and a discussion. The PEP consisted in delivering the guidelines to the FDs and the leaflets to patients. The effect of the programmes on the FDs was measured through the appropriateness of prescriptions and analysed using the differences-in-differences estimator (D-in-D), and on patients through changes in self-medication and in their knowledge about the proper use and adverse events by analysing the inter- and intra-group differences before and after the programmes.Results The IEP obtained better results to improve appropriate FDs prescription of NOA than PEP (D-in-D = 15%). Regarding the patients, the PEP group reached higher reduction of self-medication than the IEP group (13.4% vs. 9.1%); the knowledge of proper NOA use increased by 8.5% in both groups, whereas knowledge of NOA-related adverse events was better in the IEP (39.6%) than in the PEP group (9.2%).Conclusions The IEP was better to improve the doctors' abilities to prescribe NOAs, and both programmes improved patients' knowledge. In Unfit for the Future, Ingmar Persson and Julian Savulescu argue that our collective existetial predicment is unprecedentedly dangerous due to climate change and terrorism. Given these global risks to human prosperity and survival, Persson and Savulescu argue that we should explore the radical possibility of moral bioenhancement in addition to cognitive enhancement. In this article, I argue that moral bioenhancements could nontrivially exacerbate the threat posed by certain kinds of malicious agents, while reducing the threat of other kinds. This (...) introduces a previously undiscussed complication to Persson and Savulescu's proposal. In the final section, I present a novel argument for why moral bioenhancement should either be compulsory or not be made available to the public at all. (shrink)

There are few problems to which legal philosophers have devoted more attention than the relationship between morality and law, or, said in different terms, between the “good” and the “obligatory”. One might think that all that should and could be said about it has already been uttered or written. Nevertheless philosophy — and legal philosophy is no exception — is just this: rethinking old problems which are in fact always new,1 and for which no definitive solution is given — nor (...) is possible, I would add — and which need a permanent effort of reassessment. In his book Philosophy of Right Hegel has criticized Kant´s moral philosophy negatively, labeling it as an “empty formalism”. As a matter of fact, Kantian concepts such as good will, categorical imperative and duty are rejected by Hegel because he considers them formal, empty and unilateral. In spite of this, by means of a scrutiny of Hegel’s argument it can be thought that such a criticism is only based upon Kant’s Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Moral. Therefore, Hegel has a (...) partial interpretation of Kant’s moral philosophy. To show this, I will first present the three concepts at issue, then I will expose Hegel’s critic to these concepts, and finally I will show some other elements in Kantian moral philosophy that allow us to reconsider Hegel’s critic. This is done in order to show that Kant’s moral philosophy is neither empty nor unilateral, despite being formal, like Hegel’s thought. (shrink)

Nelson Maldonado-Torres argues that European modernity has become inextricable from the experience of the warrior and conqueror. In _Against War_, he develops a powerful critique of modernity, and he offers a critical response combining ethics, political theory, and ideas rooted in Christian and Jewish thought. Maldonado-Torres focuses on the perspectives of those who inhabit the underside of western modernity, particularly Jewish, black, and Latin American theorists. He analyzes the works of the Jewish Lithuanian-French philosopher and religious thinker Emmanuel (...) Levinas, the Martiniquean psychiatrist and political thinker Frantz Fanon, and the Catholic Argentinean-Mexican philosopher, historian, and theologian Enrique Dussel. Considering Levinas’s critique of French liberalism and Nazi racial politics, and the links between them, Maldonado-Torres identifies a “master morality” of dominion and control at the heart of western modernity. This master morality constitutes the center of a warring paradigm that inspires and legitimizes racial policies, imperial projects, and wars of invasion. Maldonado-Torres refines the description of modernity’s war paradigm and the Levinasian critique through Fanon’s phenomenology of the colonized and racial self and the politics of decolonization, which he reinterprets in light of the Levinasian conception of ethics. Drawing on Dussel’s genealogy of the modern imperial and warring self, Maldonado-Torres theorizes race as the naturalization of war’s death ethic. He offers decolonial ethics and politics as an antidote to modernity’s master morality and the paradigm of war. _Against War_ advances the de-colonial turn, showing how theory and ethics cannot be conceived without politics, and how they all need to be oriented by the imperative of decolonization in the modern/colonial and postmodern world. In the following paper, I wish to examine a problem for the theist libertarian. On the one hand, libertarians insist that freedom requires possible alternatives open to the agent. On the other hand, God’s perfectly formed moral character implies that He always does the morally best. Give His moral character, then, it appears that there are no possible alternatives open to God. We thus get a dilemma for the theist libertarian: either a) God is not libertarian free – because His (...) moral character rules out possible alternatives; or b) God’s character is not perfectly formed – because libertarian freedom requires that it is possible for God to act out of character. In the present paper, I argue that Thomas Reid, a paradigmatic libertarian, has the theoretical tools to retain a robust account of libertarian freedom without compromising a robust account of perfectly formed characters. In sum, it is necessary that agents with fully formed characters always act in character (read de dicto), but it is possible that agents with fully formed characters act out of character (read de re). The former claim captures the robustness of perfectly formed moral characters and the latter claim captures the robustness of libertarian freedom. (shrink)

The Collapse of the Rule of Law. The Messina Earthquake and the State of Exception Messina, a Sicilian town, was devasteted by an earthquake in1908. It was an hecatomb. Stricken through this unfathomable disgrace Messina’s institutions and civil society collapsed and a sort of wild natural state replaced the rule of law. In this situation there was a first intervention of the Russian Czarist navy who came to help but immediately enforced cruel emergency measures. The Italian army followed and there (...) was a formal declaration of an ‘emergency situation.’ Around this event and the several exceptional measures taken by the government a debate took place about the legality of those exceptional measures. The article tries to reconstruct the historical context and the content of that debate and in a broader perspective thematizes how law (and morality) could be brought to meet the breaking of normality and ordinary life by an unexpected and catastrophic event. The practice of hiring foreign coaches to lead national teams has been on the rise and is especially visible at the Olympic Games. It has been criticised in both the receiving and the lending countries as a breach of patriotic duty. In a recent publication I defended expatriate coaching as a morally unobjectionable practice with many beneficial effects. In this article, I extend my defence of expatriate coaching into the realm of the Olympic Games. I argue that when articulated from (...) the perspective of moderate patriotism this practice is not only compatible with Olympism, the philosophical vision that underpins the Olympic movement, but also that it enacts and advances the tenets of this vision. In the process, I provide a coherent explanation for the Olympic authorities' lack of an official stance on expatriate coaching and reflect on their disparate stand on the nationality of coaches and athletes. From the thought of mid-twentieth century Mexican philosopher Jorge Portilla, I develop an account of what I call ‘ethics of ethnic identity,’ which include: a) a set of norms of agency grounded in ethnic identity, or ethnic norms of agency—reasons for action and obligations that spring from a given ethnic identity, and b) a type of normativity governing these ethnic norms of agency. I argue that one of the theoretical advantages of this account is that it fares well with respect (...) to human flourishing, moral obligations, and freedom and autonomy. I also develop an account of ethics of ethnic identity from Christine Korsgaard’s account of the sources of normativity and use it as a sophisticated foil against which my elaborations of Portilla’s views can be fruitfully contrasted. RésuméLa présente étude aborde la question de savoir comment l’œuvre du Marquis de Sade reste sur les développements des jeux du langage wittgensteniens, c’est-à-dire des pratiques langagières associées à la communication dans un contexte donné. Tout d’abord, une identification de la règle (en tant qu’élément organique d’une pratique langagière), et du rôle de l’abduction peircienne pour son application, montre que pour Sade « faire la même chose » (c’est-à-dire suivre la règle) lui permet de créer un système sémiotique pour justifier (...) une idéologie du privilège bourgeois. Ainsi conçue, la règle d’auteur devient expérience iconique d’hypervisibilité (fondée sur la frontalité de la sexualité) lorsqu’elle est appliquée par le lecteur (participant potentiel) à des nouveaux jeux du langage. En ce sens, les jeux du langage proposés par Sade visent à franchir les rets du livre pour justifier les illusions (im)morales de l’auteur, clés de voûte de toute son œuvre. (shrink)

Astrobiocentrism is a vision that places us in a scenario of confirmation of life in the universe, either as a second genesis or as an expansion of humanity in space. It manages to raise consistent arguments in relation to questions such as what would happen to knowledge if life were confirmed in the universe, how would this change the way we understand our place in the cosmos? Astrobiocentrism raises a series of reflections in the context of confirmed discovery, and it (...) develops concepts that work directly with what would happen after irrefutable evidence has been obtained that we are not alone in space. Unlike biocentrism or ecocentrism, the astrobiocentric view is not limited to the Earth-centric perspective, and for it incorporates a multi-, inter- and transdisciplinary understanding. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to make a reflection on the astrobiocentric issues related to the challenges and problems of the discovery of life in the universe and the expansion of mankind into space. Here we explore some aspects of the transition from biogeocentrism to astrobiocentrism, astrobiosemiotics, homo mensura, moral community, planetary sustainability and astrotheology. (shrink)

La gestación por sustitución, llamada también subrogación de útero o alquiler de vientres, es una práctica que suscita múltiples problemas éticos relacionados con los límites morales del mercado, la idea del cuerpo humano como objeto de contrato o los conflictos entre libertad negativa y positiva. Además, la repercusión de las ideologías políticas y del feminismo en el debate es notable: por un lado, las izquierdas critican la mercantilización de la capacidad reproductiva, pues genera injusticias y grandes desigualdades; por otro, (...) el feminismo se opone a que las mujeres sean tratadas como medios para cumplir fines, y considera que la subrogación de útero conduce a la negación de las libertades conquistadas. El autor de este libro denuncia que el mercado reproductivo de corte neoliberal, nutriéndose del deseo de tener hijos y escudándose en la defensa de la libre elección, fomenta prácticas que perjudican a las mujeres gestantes, en clara desventaja económica y social, para satisfacer los intereses procreativos de las clases privilegiadas. Y en su crítica rescata conceptos clave de la izquierda emancipadora para abordar el debate en términos de derechos básicos y justicia social. (shrink)

La presente obra está destinada a estudiar la incidencia de la sistematización y secuenciación procedimental en el desarrollo discente. Propone una mejora cualitativa en la adquisición de conocimientos teóricos y prácticos, así como en la capacitación del pensamiento crítico, del juicio razonado y de la sensibilidad moral en el ámbito de la Teoría de la Educación. Se presenta como un proceso segmentado, es decir, como una progresión o secuencia de pasos que se orienta a una tarea final consistente en intentar (...) poner a prueba si el citado proceso resulta eficiente en su orden. Así, pues, esta larga tarea o flujo de trabajo se propone investigar si la acción pedagógica estructurada y secuenciada resulta globalmente más segura, fructífera y vigorosa que las acciones complejas puntuales por lo que se refiere al logro y consolidación de determinadas capacidades. De lo que se trata es de estudiar la validez de una metodología procesual que evite convertir las asignaturas en compartimentos estancos por lo que se refiere a las competencias y a las capacidades discentes, y comprobar si la secuenciación temático-procedimental propuesta supone una mejora apreciable en la calidad de la docencia, así como un beneficio presente y futuro para los estudiantes, que son sus verdaderos destinatarios. O artigo tem por objeto o exame de três registros de gritantes e distintos paradoxos na Doutrina do Direito de Kant. Registros feitos em tempos e contextos históricos diferentes por Friedrich Bouterwek, Marcus Willaschek e Balthazar Barbosa Filho. Bouterwek atribuiu a Kant a mais paradoxal das proposições jamais enunciadas por qualquer autor, a de que a mera ideia de soberania deve obrigar-nos a obedecer como a nosso inquestionável senhor a quem quer que se haja estabelecido como tal, sem que caiba (...) indagar quem lhe deu o direito de comandar-nos. Willaschek aponta a incompatibilidade de duas teses centrais da doutrina kantiana: a do caráter externo dos vínculos jurídicos e a da incondicionalidade obrigacional do direito positivo, pois não é possível entender como é possível termo-nos como obrigados por imperativos jurídicos e, ao mesmo, vermo-nos internamente isentados do dever de obedecê-los. O ponto crítico de Balthazar é alegar que não pode haver na filosofia kantiana uma crítica da razão político e jurídica, simplesmente porque o conceito de imputação, base da normatividade própria dessas esferas, pressupõe uma pluralidade de agentes livres que, justamente, só pode ser uma pressuposição, pois nosso acesso à normatividade prática só pode ter lugar em primeira pessoa. No exame a que o artigo submete essas alegações, o artigo argumenta, em objeção à tese de Balthazar, que o caráter universal e categórico da força que vincula o sujeito quando confrontado com a lei moral em primeira pessoa necessariamente se desvaneceria se, ao mesmo tempo, ele não fosse tomado pela evidência de que a realidade objetiva dos princípios morais é não só instanciável, mas assegurada pela múltipla instanciação. Com relação às dificuldades levantadas por Willaschek e Bouterwek, o artigo argumenta que o princípio exeundum e statu naturali, enquanto norma metapositiva, anterior à divisão do domínio prático entre doutrina do direito e doutrina da virtude, permite ao mesmo tempo compreender a exigência de obediência ao poder constituído e a restrição das obrigações jurídico-políticas exclusivamente ao foro externo.AbstractThe object of the article is to examine three claims about three distinct and allegedly blatant paradoxes in Kant's Doctrine of Right. These three critical points had been made in distinct times and contexts by Friedrich Bouterwek, Marcus Willaschek e Balthazar Barbosa Filho. Bouterwek attributed to Kant the most paradoxical of all paradoxical propositions, the statement that by the mere idea of sovereignty we are obliged to obey as our lord who has imposed himself upon us, without questioning from where he got such right. Willaschek points out the incompatibility of two main theses of Kantian doctrine of right: the claims that the legal bounds are of external character and that they are the source of unconditional obligations, since it seems impossible to understand how it would be possible to be obliged by juridical norms and decisions and at the same time to be exempted of the internal duty of compliance. The radical objection of Professor Balthazar is the claim that in the context of Kantian Philosophy it is impossible to admit a critique of the juridical and political reason because the concept of imputation, ground of the normativity in these domains, requires not only the presupposition of free agents, but a true and secure epistemic access to them, which is, according to him, impossible considering that the moral law and the other practical principles are accessible for us only in the first person. In the course of the appraisal of such claims, the article contest that objection arguing that the universal and categorical force of the normative bound experienced by the subject when confronted with the moral law in the first person would ineluctably vanish if, at the same time, he had not been taken by the evidence that the objective reality of the moral principles is secured by multiple instancing. Regarding the difficulties raised by Willaschek and Bouterwek, the article argues that the principle exeundum e statu naturali, as a norm of meta-positive character, prior to the division of practical domains between the doctrine of right and the doctrine of virtue, is the cue both to the understanding of the requirement of unquestioning obedience to the constituted power and to the restriction of the validity of this requirement only in foro externo. Who owns nature? The question could be less important than reducing animal sufferings in nature. It does not matter if nature does not belong to anyone or if it belongs to someone, because in both cases there are limitations, linked with animal welfare, regarding what we should do in nature. Sentient beings have interests that we must take into account when designing environmental policies. Since neither ecosystems nor plants have interests, preserving nature is less important than reducing animal sufferings. The (...) relevant moral issue is, therefore, knowing what happens to sentient animals in nature and developing policies to reduce their sufferings. This implies that we have the moral obligation of intervening in nature with the aim of reducing animal sufferings, so conservationist environmental policies defended by ecologists are morally unacceptable. La superación del racionalismo y del relativismo no ha podido gestarse con fecundidad. Posiblemente porque el absolutismo racionalista -que salva la razón a costa de anular la vida- y el relativismo -que salva la vida negando la razón- se han desplazado en una dimensión única que imposibilitaba la insumisión a ese dilema vertebrado por una concepción absolutista de la verdad y que nos constriñe a instalarnos en alguno de sus términos. La constante aparición del nexo entre los problemas antropológicos más (...) relevantes y la crítica de la metafísica exigen que la postmodernidad sea reubicada en un contexto que supere su inserción en un escenario que tengan por trasfondo únicamente a la modernidad. En otras palabras, hay una necesidad de trascender el binomio modernidad-postmodernidad. De esta manera, se considera que la tradición realista debe aparecer en escena en abierto diálogo crítico con los posicionamientos cronológicamente posteriores. Por lo que se refiere a la estructura de la presente obra hay que decir que sus once capítulos se distribuyen en tres partes. La primera de ellas intenta desentrañar y ordenar los elementos que generan el estado de cierta postración en el que se halla el pensamiento crítico-especulativo. En la segunda parte se procede a recorrer cada una de las derivaciones más relevantes de la desconfianza de la razón hacia sí misma. Por último, la tercera parte intenta poner de manifiesto qué posibilidades quedan al pensamiento de la constitución de lo nuevo tanto en el ámbito filosófico como en el pedagógico. Los modernos creyeron que al ser humano cabe forjarlo por el poder de la razón; los postmodernos estiman que no debe hacerse. ¿Es sólo por casualidad que hay una coincidencia fundamental entre ambas perspectivas? En el fondo, uno y otro convienen que la razón lo puede todo; modernos y postmodernos coinciden en la creencia del poder ilimitado de la razón y, como consecuencia de ello, creen en la posibilidad de la ilimitada y absoluta transformación de la totalidad de lo real. Y ello, aunque lo hagan en sentido diverso y lo valoren de manera inversa. Cabe, pues, pensar que, en el fondo, no hay más que una remodelación monótona de lo mismo. Las repercusiones del nihilismo, del relativismo moral, de la crisis antropológica postmoderna, de los nacionalismos identitarios, del pluralismo religioso, de la política democrática y de los tópicos del relativismo cultural son, pues, abordados –y enhebrados- en la Crítica de la razón moderna. Por ello, esta obra supone una seria y muy completa contribución al esclarecimiento de la vertebración del pensamiento y las prácticas culturales vigentes. Además, es una obra imprescindible en la biblioteca de profesores y de estudiantes de las facultades de Educación, Filosofía, Historia, Teología, Ciencias Políticas y Sociología. Y también resulta relevante para todas aquellas personas que se afanan por comprender los fundamentos teóricos de las perspectivas sociales y humanísticas actuales así como sus derivaciones y praxis concretas. Esta investigación está orientada hacia la formulación de herramientas de naturaleza teórico – prácticas para la formación de docentes reflexivos, cuya operacionalización en la práctica constituyen aportes para la formación de educadores que estén preparados para planificar, ejecutar y evaluar acciones pedagógicas desde una reflexión permanente en la práctica y sobre la práctica profesional. La noción de mímesis es una de las más complejas de la filosofía platónica. Para Platón, esta noción implica de manera integral distintas dimensiones del alma humana y las vincula a una actividad reflectiva que se da entre dichas dimensiones y aquello en lo que se proyectan, a fin de reproducirlo. La problemática de la mímesis gana, de este modo, una importancia mayúscula en los terrenos artístico y moral, si bien también goza de un peso importante en la ontología y (...) psicología. Bajo esta noción, nuestro autor dibuja una suerte de ontología de la imagen que colorea su relación con la teoría de las formas. Así pues, en este análisis reflexionaremos sobre los distintos tipos de mímesis y en concreto sobre el sentido de la mímesis eikástica, lo que nos permitirá valorar su función terapéutica, aspecto que a menudo ha pasado desapercibido bajo las críticas a la concepción platónica de la actividad mimética. Todo ello apuntará, a su vez, a perfilar una concepción hermenéutica de la filosofía donde la función catártica de la comprensión quedará en primer lugar. (shrink)

One important limitation of the current renditions of interpretivism is that its emphasis on the moral dimension of sport has overlooked the aesthetic dimension lying at the core of this account of sport. The interpretivist’s failure to acknowledge and consider the aesthetic implicitly distances this realm from the moral. Marcia Muelder Eaton calls this distancing the separatist mistake. This paper argues that interpretivism presupposes not only moral but also aesthetic principles and values. What it sets out to demonstrate is that (...) interpretivism is an integralist, or nonseparatist, account of sport, one in which ethical and aesthetic values are not exclusive. Making explicit and specifying interpretivism’s combined moral-aesthetic approach to sport not only helps to better distinguish the whole range of values that make up sport as well as their interconnection but also encourages sportspeople to pursue more coherent sport and, thus, more enriching lives. Dos inquietudes han determinado las palabras que componen la presente obra. La primera es de raigambre filosófica, y se refiere a la necesidad de clamar por la unidad de la persona en un período histórico como el actual caracterizado por profundas escisiones en sus dimensiones constitutivas. La segunda inquietud es de orden pedagógico, dado que la restitución de la persona ha de pasar por una educación interior que, recogiendo la totalidad de las dimensiones de aquélla, puedan verterse al todo social (...) sin necesidad de dirigismo alguno. La densidad del alma es un libro que recorre la interioridad personal sin esquivar ninguno de sus contenidos más propios. Por supuesto, tampoco elude abordar la intensa y rica profundidad de tal interioridad. En su desarrollo tales incursiones se realizan siempre desde el convencimiento en la eficacia de todas las posibilidades de una educación interior en virtudes. Tiempo, muerte, eternidad y resurrección son los ejes referenciales en los que se inscriben todos los demás temas, tales como la humildad, el silencio, la lealtad, el sacrificio, el valor, la marcialidad, la nobleza, el servicio, la esperanza y la fe. De estilo conciso y directo, no renuncia a la sonoridad literaria como tampoco a la expresión fiel de la realidad. Fidelidad que en absoluto está reñida con la firme convicción en que es tan posible como necesaria la elevación moral de todos desde cada uno. La densidad del alma se estructura en tres grandes capítulos. Sus mismos títulos –el primero, Interioridad. Diálogos íntimos; el segundo, Nación y destino. Diálogos compartidos y, el tercero, Eternidad. Diálogos trascendentes- expresan con claridad no sólo el itinerario seguido sino, además, las dimensiones fundamentales y constitutivas del ser humano: íntima, sociopolítica y trascendente. Un capítulo introductorio, que lleva por título Espíritu vertical, realiza la tarea de guía inicial que encamina al lector hacia el apasionante y fecundo mundo espiritual de la persona humana. La tarea de conocerse no puede abarcar toda una vida. Es necesario decidirse por lo mejor, decantarse por lo más excelso, y seguirlo. Es una obligación que ha de asumirse libremente con independencia de errores, deserciones y decepciones. Es nuestra más gozosa tarea. Es mi mejor tarea. (shrink)

Hablando con los descendientes es un compendio de entrevistas llevadas a cabo a los descendientes de los más importantes artistas –sobre todo– del período romántico. Se relaciona con el artículo de costumbres y con la crónica periodística. En esta recopilación Colombine sabe ver lo general, pero le abruma lo particular por lo que, en muchas ocasiones, se pierde en la maleza de las nimiedades y anécdotas de las vidas de sus protagonistas. Lleva a cabo una tipificación de sus personajes en (...) la que, como ocurría con Mesonero, cuentan más los modos de vivir, que los modos de ser. Tocada de lleno por el positivismo y el racionalismo, la autora defendió la importancia de la experiencia vital propia de cada hombre. Fascinada por el progreso material de la sociedad moderna, parece vislumbrar, sin embargo, la necesidad de proveer a este proyecto una alternativa regida por la virtud. Encontramos un idealismo humanístico de códigos morales que convive junto a la presencia de la tradición del pasado a la que considera válida para la formación de nuevos patrones del presente. Zaratustra, aquel mítico profeta persa, es para Nietzsche la autosuperación de la moral, de aquella moral escindida entre el bien y el mal que él mismo profesó y que por medio de Nietzsche ha de superar con su figura del superhombre. Las características propias de la superación son esbozadas desde Así habló Zaratustra hasta La voluntad de poder , en donde se señalan los rasgos de la crítica; una crítica contundente hacia las dimensiones epistemológicas y ontológicas de la metafísica abstracta (...) del ser, y un ataque contundente a la ciencia positivista y su pretensión de universalidad que niega la posibilidad de la acción de la subjetividad. Por eso el Vitalismo de Nietzsche señala el tránsito de la superación: el nihilismo como motor de la historia, que va desde un estado negativo a uno positivo que debe conllevar a una gran transvalorización de la moral. En el Vitalismo de Nietzsche, la transvalorización de la moral debe de producir un tipo de hombre dotado de una nueva metafísica, la metafísica de los valores, guiada por la voluntad de poder y su fuerza activa. La voluntad de poder es uno de los tópicos propios de su filosofía, mostrando el largo y tedioso camino hacia una nueva civilización superior, profecía del cual salió de la boca del mayor inmoralista de la historia: Zaratustra. A new approach to the metaphysics of the will to power in Thus Spoke Zarathustra Zarathustra, that mythical Persian prophet is for Nietzsche the self-overcoming of morality, that morality split between good and evil that he himself practiced, which for Nietzsche, will be overcome with his figure of the Overman. The intrinsic characteristics of overcoming are outlined from Thus spoke Zarathustra up to The Will to Power , where features of the critique are pointed, a forceful critique of the epistemological and ontological dimensions of the abstract metaphysics of being, and a forceful assault on the positivist science and its pretensions of universality that denies subjectivity of all possibility for action. That is why Nietzsche's Vitalism indicates the transit of the overcoming: nihilism as the engine of history, which goes from a negative to a positive condition, thus leading to a great transvaluation of morality. On Nietzsche's Vitalism the transvaluation of morality must produce a type of man possessed of a new metaphysics –the metaphysics of values, guided by the will to power and its active force. “The will to power” is one of the topics characteristic of his philosophy, showing the long and tedious way towards a new, higher civilization, prophecy of which it came out of the mouth of the greatest immoralist in history: Zarathustra. . The Olympic Games and the soccer World Cup are large international mega-events that demonstrate how highly valued sport is around the world. However, alongside the celebrations of sporting excellences is the opportunity to reflect upon and criticize the International Olympic Committee, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, and the host cities for ethical concerns that often accompany these events. One recent example is FIFA’s decision to ban women’s soccer players from wearing hijabs. Yet the IOC has encoded in its own (...) charter ethical and axiological mandates that it terms Olympism. This Olympic philosophy can be fruitfully understood as an intersubjective moral approach to sport and sport governance. So conceived, it can be used to gain clarity on FIFA’s decision, both in terms of its ethical decision-making process and its conclusions. While FIFA recently lifted the ban, concerns about the process are still evident. (shrink)

Leibniz’s account of moral necessity does double heavy-duty: it aims a) to provide explanations of divine choices without rendering these divine choices metaphysically necessary, thus permitting for divine freedom; and b) to ground the conviction that God did the best God could have done in creating the world, or Leibnizian Optimism. I present a novel interpretation of what Leibniz calls ‘the principle of the best’ as a second-order will to do what is best (read de dicto) that grounds a set (...) of subjunctive conditionals of divine freedom. These conditionals encode what God would do (namely the best) if God were to deliberate about creating one of a set of mutually exclusive options which are metaphysically possible for God to create. I argue that this reading of the principle of the best enables Leibnizian moral necessity to do the mentioned double heavy-duty. (shrink)

This paper takes the dichotomy between “exclusive” and “inclusive” positivism and applies it by analogy to natural-law theories. With John Finnis, and with Beyleved and Brownsword, we have examples of “exclusive natural-law theory,” on which approach the law is valid only if its content satisfies a normative monological moral theory. The discourse theories of Alexy and Habermas are seen instead as “inclusive natural-law theories,” in which the positive law is a constitutive moment in that it identifies moral rules and specifies (...) their meaning. The article argues that inclusive theories of natural law are better suited to expressing an authentic “republican” attitude.*In the seed of the city of the just, a malignant seed is hidden, in its turn: the certainty and pride of being in the right. The current times call for reforms in educational processes. The Covid-19 pandemic had an unforeseen impact on the educational system in all countries. This need for change requires new pedagogies and new methods for teaching and learning. Understanding the need for change is essential for the formulation of adaptive proposals, as well as for the generation of training activities to complement the teaching curriculum. New educational practices lead to a vision of educational quality, with new approaches that allow the continuous (...) integration of knowledge and permanent interaction with the student. This paper presents an analysis of the new teaching methodologies in times of confinement due to the pandemic caused by Covid-19. Saggio sul positivismo giuridico e la sua crisi”. Al hilo del trabajo del citado autor, los participantes reflexionan sobre preguntas centrales para la teoría y filosofía del Derecho contemporánea: ¿cuál es la naturaleza del Derecho? ¿es el razonamiento jurídico eminentemente moral? ¿qué lugar debe ocupar la práctica jurídica en su conceptualización? ¿qué lugar (...) ocupa la fuerza en el Derecho?
